Mechanical fuel pump

Hi all,

I looked at past threads and don't see anything current. So I have a question on fuel pump manufactures.

I was always told Carter is the only manufacture of these pumps.
Is that still true?

I see prices from $55.00 Spectra brand, to well over $100 for Ford oem parts.
With other prices in between.

I usually like oem parts for stuff like this, and don't mind paying a higher price for a better part.
But I don't like paying double for a different box.

Thanks,
Joe

It was always said that all the pumps were made by Carter and rebranded as other name parts. They always said to use the cheap ones as they were made by Carter. Can't say if it is still true now.

I don't know much about the mechanical pumps manufacture origin but I do believe the Ford oem pump is much better than other brand replacement pumps.

I don't have experience with this, but I believe I read this before saying the Ford oem pumps were much better. Also, I know someone with a 97 powerstroke where he runs almost straight ATF in it. He was buying off brand mechanical pumps every year until he switched to the Ford oem pump. The Ford one has lasted much longer so far than the off brand pumps so that tells me it probably is better quality.

I think I'll make a couple calls today to see if I can get current info.

Thanks,

That's interesting.
Do you know if his failures were leaks or did the pump quit pumping?

Thanks,
joe

That I don't know. I believe the pumps weren't pumping as well (due to the ATF being a thicker liquid straining the pump more) but I'd have to ask.

Makes sense that the thicker fluid would be a problem.

Thanks,
