door lock cylinder

I asked this in the past and searched but could not find the old thread. My 56,not being a custom cab, had no lock cylinder in the drivers side door, only the passenger side. I have no key for the one cylinder, and the ignition switch is an aftermarket one. I would like to buy a pair of door cylinders and install one in the drivers door. Making the hole in the door will be a pain in the *** and I would like to know if the necessary parts are in the drivers door to be able to lock and unlock it with the key and cylinder I suppose I can remove the latch assemblies from both doors and compare them. Anyone know the answer before I begin tearing into the doors? Thanks.

In the past I have bought pairs of door locks from Midfifty. As I recall there is nothing special about the driver's door other than having to drill the hole in the door skin. I believe that there is a slot under the weatherstrip to insert the lock retainer clip...I can't believe that Ford would have had two separate doors, one with and one without the clip slot. If you are not comfortable drilling the lock hole in the door then take it to a local machine or body shop.

Hello, here are 2 threads that discuss aspects of this, both fitting and adjustment if necessary to get working right. Hope they are of interest and help to you. I wasn't game to drill the hole for driver's lock so I got my mechanic to do it. Every thing is in the door to make it work, just needs the cylinder and actuating lever, they come in the kit from Mid Fifty. It is great to have a lock on the driver's door. I found it easier and more accurate to fit the locking plate from inside the door, rather than from the slot in the door. Good luck with it.

I believe when you order the kit from Mid Fifty, it will come with a template for drilling the door.

Mid Fifty does have a template. Link below. It states that you should not print and use because it might not be accurate. I bet you could make it work by comparing to the passenger side. If you decide to do it keep us updated please.

I just did this on my truck. I didn't trust the template so I used the Pax door. I used tape to lay it all out, and a exacto knife to cut the holes out of the tape. I then transferred it to paper.

Took about an hour to do it all.
