Hey guys, im making a run from laramie wyoming back home to austin tx and trying to drive my carbureted 460 down there, if i have an edlbrock 650, what jet, spring and metering rod cobinations would be best at 5000, 3000 and 1000 foot? And sea level? Thanks so much!
Honestly? I've never changed from roughly sea level to 5,000 feet. Whatever you have in there at the moment, assuming it is running well, should be passable.
There is a problem when running from a high altitude to low altitude, if the carburetor has been dialed in. Lean fuel mixtures while under heavy power demand is not good at all. Burned pistons and valves.
Many carburetors out of the box are setup to run on the pig rich side of things though, I seriously doubt there would be any cause for concern with only a ~5K change in elevation either way. If on the other hand, you had it dialed in for the lean side of things running at say, 10K feet, then that would be a real problem at sea level. You'd already know what to do if that were the case.
To be safe though, and nobody knowing how your carb is actually setup you can check, and make any necessary adjustments as follows:
