No Spark and Getting Nowhere!

not to rain on anyones parade but ... parts were tossed here. no diagnosis was done and eventually the right part was tossed at the problem. i do hope all is now well with the truck, but no newcomer to these trucks is going to learn anything from this particular thread. this may sound harsh, and that is not my intention, just trying to steer people towards diagnosis rather than guesswork.

And to the OP's credit, he did say he had no spark. And he was kinda left to his own to discount the fuel pressure posts. And yes, his electrical diagnostic approach was component-oriented rather than wiring-oriented (I have read and my experience has been that 80% of electrical issues are wiring-caused rather than component-caused)*, but he showed faith and came back to post his results and his success and we should encourage him to share what he has learned and what he would do differently if he knew then what he knows now.

I know during most of my life, my lessons were from my own mistakes. This forum is to help others learn from our mistakes so that they don't have to go down the same errant path as I (maybe we) did.

*P.S. Never put dielectric grease in a plug. Ever. Flush/blast clean with the red straw on CRC Contact Cleaner and gently wipe with micro Q-Tips and then maybe finish up by adding some contact enhancer like DeOxit Gold. IMHO.

Okay, so you say I did no diagnosis. Living in the middle of nowhere, 100 miles from any mechanic, specialized testing equipment or a parts store, plus, not a professional mechanic myself, what would you have suggested? The truck died at the snap of a finger. I quickly learned I had no spark, the old fashioned way. We had a spark tester that verified that. My wife was in a town that week and I had her pick up a coil, an ICM and a couple of other cheap items, just in case. When those failed to fix the problem, another friend that was helping me, went to town and while there picked up a re-manufactured distributor. I was only $200 in to new parts... new parts that I am not sorry to have. While working on my truck, it was snowing, 30 degrees and the wind was howling most of the time. I'm 58 years old and have a good basic knowledge of auto mechanics... I have done most all my own work on all my vehicles since I was 16. Two other locals that are well above my knowledge of auto mechanic were scratching their heads. I'm sorry if I wasted people's time on here, but I was a bit frustrated with people saying it sounded like fuel problems, when they obliviously did not read my post. Maybe, this will help just one other person out that ends up in the same situation as mine. I'm good with that. One last $60 ECM part the trick. If I had to tow my truck 100 miles and turn it over to a shop, how much would that have costs me? Thanks for the input, but considering my circumstance, This could have cost me a whole lot more time and money.

Thank you, Tim. Maybe I didn't make myself clear in my original post and I apologize for that. I did the best I could to call out the problems, what simple tests we did and what I had accomplished so far. I honestly have never had an ECM go bad on me, so it was the last thing on my mind. If my situation and conditions were different, I might have had better luck with getting to the core of the problem sooner and easier. I appreciate your reply!
