Windshield Rubber Molding

Folks; I finally got my 54 back from the paint shop!(4weeks) !!! now I can try and install the glass.Anyhow, the question I have is,the instructions from (DALE'S) who made the rubber moldings, wants a sealant between the glass and the molding and also between the molding and the body flange. Is it absolutely necessary or can I install the windshield and the rear glass without sealer? I remember when I removed the old bullet riddled one there was some (hard sealer) arround the flange. I am afraid that some of the (butel) will get on the new paint and mess it up. I have purchaced 3M Windo-Weld and the short time allowed to work with I am not sure I won't mess it up. Are there any other sealants I can use or any other sugestions? Thanks Jim VA.

In the shop manual for the '48-52 truck it says to use rubber cement. I didn't do this so everytime I wash my truck or get caught in the rain my widow leaks at the two bottom low spots. I know I should yank the window out but it a bit of a pain and I have already broke one windshield and don't feel like messing with it. I don't think rubber cement will mess up your paint, especially if you had you truck painted with a modern urathane paint, that stuff is practically bullit proof.

I used a window bedding compound as I recall. Almost a tar like sealant that really never hardens all the way. It's butyl I believe. It's messy but it will come off the paint and glass with mineral spirits almost indefinitely. I thought you were only supposed to put it between the glass and the seal though. Mine doesn't leak as far as I can tell.

Bob and Fenders; I should have put my glasses on while reading the instructions! They do say to apply sealer between the glass and the molding but don't mention between the molding and the body flange. However as I said before when I removed the old windshield, there was some type of (semi soft) sealer around the flange, which took about one half of a day to remove completely. Maybe sometime in time in the past sealer was used where it was not needed. As much as the paint job cost,I did not want to ruin it! I think I will apply only a very lite coat of the 3m polyurathane with my finger to the flange before installing, just to be on the safe side. Thanks, and enjoy the holiday. Jim VA.

Are you certain the 3M product you have is correct for this? It almost sounds like a product for sealing up a normal late model glass leak. You may or may not need some time to make minor tweaks to the rubber when you install the glass in the truck for good fitment against the body. You should be able to pull the seal off the windshield next month without much difficulty if you needed too and use the seal again.

You mention a short work time? That doesn't sound right at all. I bought my bedding coumpound from a glass shop for 8 bucks. I could be all wrong and your 3M window weld product is OK. I apologize if that's the case.

I think fatfenders is rite. That sounds like the wrong stuff. I think window weld is used to glue a modern windsheld in a newer type cars or trucks. I have used window weld to glue in vent windows on older chevy pickups and it was messy and hard to get off.

Bingo...the correct product is a tar/rubber like sealant specifically made for sealing auto glass. Otherwise the water will "sit" in the open areas and eventually work its way in while creating rust.

I tried to do without it but the water still came in so I had to give in and use it. Highly recommend using a ckaulk gun and a large tube.

After reading the posts I have second thoughts about using what I have(windo weld) it sounds like it's for as you guys say," newer glass", Has anyone the brand name or part # for the correct sealent? The local glass shop recently closed, and I don't have axcess for information. Thanks Jim VA.

I got mine from Napa. It is called windshield sealant. Very gooey. I applied it into the groove on the rubber via the long thin spout/tube. It was much easier after I laid out the rubber on a bench and secured the 4 corners to it with duct tape. John

If you want a little extra fun and have the chrome strip for the five star cab, try installing that! You have to have at least on more hand to get that installed

Yes you need to pookey between the rubber and the body. When Windshield Masters of Grand Prairie TX put my windshield in, he did not use anything. I asked "Is this going to leak where I can see light through?" "Oh no. that is at the bottom. No problem."

Leaked like a sieve. But by the time I found that out, it was "out of warranty."
