No it just puts a little more strain on the motor for even worst MPG.
It does not hurt to throw it in 4x4 hubs un locked to get oil moving around in the transfer case and front axle.
Could even put it in low range and run it across a long parking lot to move oil around then back in to 4x2 high.
Thing is most throw it in 4x4 when it is cold out and the 90 wt oil does not like to move too well so things can start moving "dry". That is why every few weeks I throw it in 4x4, hubs un locked and run it down the parking lot, shift to low and run it back, then 4x2 and on my way down the road.
