For those wanting to go deeper than 4.30, hypertech makes an inline module(sold by 5 star) that goes behind the cluster. This will adjust for the gears greater than 4.30 and tires taller than 35". That's the limits of the SCT tuner. I will add the 5 star SCT tuner, which can be ran with the hypertech module after my power train warranty expires.
What do gears affect that needs the Hypertech? I don't think any modern truck's speed is influenced by gears, correct? Of course tires do.

But speaking of... When talking towing, I see all the time where folks go bigger gears, but also bigger tires, which in and of itself is fine. To each his own. But my point is that folks always talk of doing gears and bigger tires thinking they're improving performance, when they're actually only maintaining the same performance but with bigger tires.

Folks who truly want to improve towing go with lower gears and keep the same tires.

Everything is electronically controlled on these trucks, the computer is programmed for the gear ratio and it effects shift points. Tire size effects your speedometer.

If a person throws 4.30s in a truck with 37's, then your correct, your not really gaining any towing performance. Your rpms may be the same, and you will increase some torque to the tires, but the torque is offset by the extra rotating weight of the tires. BUT, I have a 3.73 truck, going to 4.88's with 37's which gives me essentially the same final gearing as a truck with 4.30's and 31.5" tires. No, it want be quite as quick as a 4.30/31.5" truck, but the towing experience will be better than a 3.73 truck.

Your probably function over form, which is fine, but I'm form over function without losing function. This is why I spent an extra $520 on tires to get e rated. I also bought a 3.5" lift versus 6" so I could fit in the car wash and keep my center of gravity down when towing. I bought wheels with the correct hub bore. I should also be able to tow a 5th wheel if ever needed. So yes, you can go bigger tires and improve on towing.

Can you just play with the factory gear and tire size settings in the computer instead of the inline modular?

I mean set it with the 34 inch 20's and 3.31 gears? Or vice versa...

Your speedo would be off, tire size is all that effects speedo, it's just a reading off the tone ring. It COULD correct shift points, idk, but why cheap out on a new truck? The set up to fool mine would be 31.5" tires and 4.30's.

I just kinda remember in the last gen dodge trucks if you had 4.10 gears and put on larger tires the dealer could change your gear setting in the computer to 3.73 and it would fix you up.

That means they had a speed sensor in the transmission/transfer case and not a tone ring in the differential.

It would also only work for tires ruffly 4" bigger in diameter.
