Coolant flush procedure
That said, how should I go about flushing the coolant system? I know this is an extremely important procedure on my 6.0.
How many gallons is the capacity? I have a couple things I am considering
.
Option 1.- Drain, fill with a 50/50 mix. Get it up to temp, then drain and refill. So two drains and call it good.
Option 2- drain, fill with distilled, get it up to temp, drain. Repeat this procedure until it is 100% distilled then drain and add the appropriate amount of concentrate to achieve a 50/50 mix ( I'll need to know the overall system capacity)
Option 3- which is what I'm thinking- this would be the same as option 2, but with a Ford vc-1 chemical flush in the beginning.
Option three is what I do on my 6.0 but with Ford vc-9 flush.
The truck has 78k on it and I plan on doing this at 80k. Is there any other maintenance items I should consider with this mileage?
The owner's manual contains a fair amount of information regarding capacities and maintenance. For example, page 411 in the 2012 OM (4th printing) specs the 6.2's coolant capacity at 21.3 quarts of Motorcraft Orange 50/50 coolant.
Searchable pdf versions of the OM's can be downloaded from Ford's website.
If you can find 100% coolant, I like Option 2. If you can only find 50/50, then I like Option 1.
I'd review the maintenance schedules carefully. If you're uncertain of the maintenance history, then the 75K mile service might be in order.
