Idle control/tranny problems

Great forum.

I have a 1993 E-150 with a 4.9 litre straight 6.

The van has 185k miles on it and it runs like a champ. My one problem is this: At times, when I put it in reverse from park it will idle high causing the transmission to "thump" into gear. This has caused me to recently replace the u-joints due to the stress.

It does not do it everytime, so I'm not sure if it's the idle control or the transmission.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks

Ford is notorious for this. The best way to fix it I found is go to www.bankspower.com. Call their store and see if you can purchase a tranny chip for that particular vehicle. Besides it makes the tranny last longer. Hope this helps.
