whats the going size for door gaps these days? door/cowl is about 1/4", and rear door/cab is about 1/8". But, door/cowl when i open the door, the door gets really close to the cowl, curious if paint will get chipped after filler, primer, and paint... I'm trying to attach a video.
Charlie does your gap get tighter when you open the door?
Not sure what you mean...the gap gets wider as I open the door, otherwise I wouldn't be able to get my fat a$$ in the truck. I think you might be referring to the gap between the front edge of the door and the cowl...that gap is not one that I have paid much attention to, if the door swings freely then all is good.
In the video I posted, when I open the door, the cowl/door gap gets slightly more narrow, then opens.
You're correct. When I got the bottom half of the original cowl cut out and welded in the bottom half of a new panel from LMC I had a small spot weld that stuck out maybe 1/32" further than the rest in that little channel where the door rests into. It looked fine when the door was closed but the door and the weld connected when I opened the door after painting. It pinched the cowl panel and scraped off my nice new paint job. Let's just say that a raised 1/32" weld was a costly mistake. I had to remove the door, grind down the weld a bit, put on bondo to clean up my crappy weld job and grinding job, sand that, prime it, sand that, airbrush that small section with my Eastwood metallic SSU and reattach the door. It was a major headache. Charlie is correct 3/16" is about right. NO LESS! When closed your door seems much too tight.
When my door is closed, I have 1/4". Don't let the video fool you. It's from an angle, not directly perpendicular to the door. I was trying to show the gap when the door opens slightly
