Hey there everybody, so I just picked up a 1964 Econoline Heavy Duty, and I'm trying to identify my motor, pretty sure it's not the original 170 that it came with. I'm new to fords, and am having trouble figuring it out. I'm thinking it's a 240 or 300. The numbers on the side of the case are e1te-6015-aa so I know it's a 1981 truck motor, but that's all I can figure out. Also, the tranny isn't shifting into 3rd gear. The fluid didn't smelled burnt, but I went ahead and serviced the transmission, replaced fluid, and replaced the vacuum modulator, but still no 3rd. Is it time to rebuild or is there something else I should do? Thanks for any help, it will be greatly appreciated!
Here she is, hopefully somebody out there will be able to identify it from just looking at it.
Regarding the trans, check the vacuum line to the modulator, make sure it has vacuum.
But first, what does your shifter quadrant look like? Prior to the "Select Shift" in '67, these were called "Green Dot Cruise-o-Matics" by some. Note there is a "." after N, then the Greed Dot. You drive and get all gears in the Green Dot. The "." starts and keeps*** you in 2nd gear.(no, see below. starts in 2nd, shifts to 3rd)
You might look at the trans--if it is '67 and up and you are in the Green Dot, you are actually in 2nd gear. Scroll down here and see examples of both in the console shifters. Column lines up the same as you see in the above image. A newer trans with the old shifter is pretty easy fix, so good luck on that!
***the "." starts you in second, but does allow a shift to 3rd. That's why you thought you didn't have 3rd, as you got a shift out of it. The '67 and up "Select Shift" models would start and hold 2nd when started in "2". You can bring that valve body over to the older trans if/when you run out of everything else you have planned.

Reason: Fix 2nd gear comment

Okay so, yeah. I was starting out in the wrong position... like I said, I'm new to fords. That being said, the thing is shifting into 2nd at 5 mph, and 3rd at about 20 mph. That seems too low. It appears that somebody has removed the kick down linkage from the tranny. Would that be causing the low shifts?
