Yup, DEF is injected only when combustion temperatures reach approximately 1,000 degrees. That happens way less often when not towing vs towing. That's actually a good report of what is expected.
Does your Superduty stink really bad during a regen? I had that happen twice today. My DEF gauge went down so I think it was the regen that made it smell so bad.
Sounds good! I would like to come visit TX this summer as a road trip; we'll see if my schedule permits.
Come on down, its a big country....state. E of I 35 lot of farm land and the big Pines of E Texas, N Central, no trees in N Dallas because up there at one time Cotton was King. Up in the Panhandle its flat and farm country, head to the Central and its the Texas Hill Country, ranches and cattle, go S and its farms and cattle ranches all the way to the Gulf coast. Go far West and its the Permian Basis one of the worlds leading oil gas producing areas.
All of these areas have their own climate and look. Down South where I am at I have the best of both worlds, South Texas and the Hill Country, warmer than Austin, cooler than San Antonio.
So load up that dually and come on down, if I got the guest bedroom remodeled I will you put up. You can spend time in San Antonio which is celebrating its 300 hundred year birthday.
Big stations around here have 8. Yes, 8 pumps, only half of which are diesel.
Here is the Buc-ee's under construction in Katy, TX at Cane Island Pkwy - don't know the official count of pumps but it looks to be over 100 as stated before. Hope they install a DEF pump island too...

Thanks Don! I get 5 weeks paid vacation from my full-time job. I typically take a week at Christmas and maybe a day or two here and there. The rest I use to help me finish projects on my "side job" which is technical sloped field mowing. I just won a new contract with a municipality for this summer. So despite "wanting" to do something it might not happen. We'll see...but Texas sounds worth seeing!

Epic, I'm not sure that is entirely true. DEF is being injected almost any time the engine is running. It is true that hot, lean exhaust creates the most NOx which got VW into trouble, but hot and lean is how diesel runs the best and is most fuel efficient. Cummins, for example, specifies DEF consumption will be 2% of diesel consumption and they do not mention towing vs non-towing. From my experience, I changed my oil around 5,000 miles and refilled my DEF at the same time. I had the low DEF message showing. My lifetime fuel economy for that period was 14mpg. So, 5000/14 is 357 gallons of diesel. 2% of 357 gallons is about 7.14 gallons...which is right on part with the DEF gauge and what the dealer put in. So yes, you are correct that towing will raise EGT's which requires more SCR to control NOx...but let's be careful to not imply that DEF is not consumed during normal unloaded operation, even idling.

Yes, the truck will smell terrible when it is performing a regeneration. However, it has nothing to do with DEF. I believe no DEF is injected during a regeneration since the act of spraying water into the exhaust would lower the EGT, which is the opposite goal of a regen.

Fair enough. I don't know how much DEF is injected when combustion temps are lowest but we do know that DEF is used at a much higher rate when the engine is really working. That was really my point.

Your point is totally solid, I agree. I was just clarifying that some DEF is injected even at idle.

Had def refilled at about 4500 miles, oil life at 50%, the def was at 33%, I was at the dealer anyways for the third time for the same transfer case leak. Interesting my def gauge sat at about 50% for a long time then dropped to 33% in about 500 miles.
