Being a retired Navigator for the military and now being a land surveyor and using military grade GPS...........If your not in your own local and want to get an Ice cream, stop at the local chamber of commerce and grab a FREE map and throw some hay out for your oxen.
I think/know folks are so used to plugging something in that's sposed to do this but it doesn't.
There is no conceivable way that electronic navigation is up to speed. It's close, but no cigar. You can buy anything up to and including an F-15 and your still not going to be as precise as the victims in the foothills that banked on it.
GPS is great when you don't have canopy, wind blowing leaves around, or your horizontal view limits satellite tracking capability say from 24 international pings to 9 domestic. That circle of relevance goes to, (this is about where I think I am at this moment). Thus the error.
You will never perceive an instant on the spot read of anything unless you are sitting static with excellent signal despite anyone's claims.

How do you know where the local chamber of commerce is without a map or a GPS?
It's an aid, not a tool.

I think anyone that's every followed their GPS and gotten lost as a result (I've done it) has learned that lesson.
I still have an old Nuvi in the truck and a Jensen double din in the dash with GPS. I'll reach for my phone every time because Google maps and Waze are so much more accurate with respect to traffic, updates and seemingly better routes. Both are more user friendly with respect to screen changes and manipulation. Get a really good solid phone mount and put it where you can use the phone as your GPS. If your an otter box or other holster user get an extra holster, pop the clip off and mount it directly to the dash so you can snap the phone in and out. Is this as clean as an in dash setup, NO but still better tools.
Just to veer a bit. It's a system we all use and I'm not the guy to put an arm on anyones shoulder, but we all know how pistons work, kinda.. this is a relevant point to the thread. Land or water.

I get what you're saying. I haven't needed GPS for years, and I do a lot of traveling. This was one situation where I needed something specific in a place I never intended to go, and decided to use the convenience of technology that was just lying around in the cab. My wife enjoyed finally getting the job of navigator, and it always pleases me to please her.
When I'm in the boat, nothing beats pouring over a paper chart and knowing my way around without some magic box doing all the thinking for me. If that sounds silly to some, just remember stuff breaks - or worse yet, can lie to you. Having no or false location information on navigable waters is major bad juju.
For the truck, I usually pour over maps and/or Google Earth (with street view) before the trip - and that usually takes care of any road navigation. Maybe I'm a control freak, but I want to know where I've been, where I'm at, and where I'm going without relying on anybody or anything beyond my memory and my ability to navigate with real-world cues (sun, stars, landmarks, street numbers, compass heading, etc...)
I got that Rich, No harm no foul. I think it's an excellent thread and just laid out my profession as you would to heighten the education on where we are for everyone's benefit as you do. You've taught me a lot, (about 7.3's anyway).
Hell we run into more knowledge from sparky to walleye and everyone I fail to mention that I love. (HATE) to say it because stewart will get pissed. And sometimes it just relates to life and not a truck.
Google has owned Waze for over two years now, and it remains a true competitor for Google Maps. I've seen a few updated tweaks on Waze since the Google buyout, but not many. I'm honestly surprised that both options still exist at this point.
AFAIK, WAZE does not have pedestrian directions available, walking to a restaurant can be much shorter than driving.
I have the Joying, while it's a nifty unit, the radio reception is nearly non-existent. I wouldn't buy it again.
I had heard that as well. Fortunatley, the new 2GB models ( which I bought in January) seem to have a much improved tuner that seems to work as well as my old ford radio. Still not in the league of the pioneer tuner but more than adaquate for me.
The onboard amp is still pretty weak and a step backward from the factory ford unita but I use a 5 channel amp and subwoofer box so not an issue for me. For users relying on the internal amp, this could be a deal breaker. To be truthful, these units are actually quite good now and continually improving. They are getting more expensive however ($300) but offer way more features and flexibility for the price compared to the traditional aftermarket stuff. If prices keep rising however, and the few noted shortcomings not addressed (adding a decent 15watt rms internal amp probably would have cost peanuts to implement), they will make the brand name units more attractive and errode sales.
There's a few detailed threads on here and on the powerstroke forum sharing people's experiences.

I just pulled the trigger on the Pioneer 4200NEX. So, if any of you would like to try a Joying unit......I have one for sale!

WAZE is really cluttered.
After trying so many different ones, HERE really seems to fit the KISS bill. It will use mobile data or the phone GPS if data is unavailable. You just download the map data for the state/states you need and you are set. connect to WiFi and update as necessary.
An extra phone or cheap $5 one from china turns into an awesome GPS.
Phone carriers are in a battle to get/keep customers, so they are offering Unlimited Data plans. I currently don't have an unlimited plan because i honestly do not go over my plan. I've got a 12 gig plan with carry over data and most cycles i end up with 3-4 gigs carrying over.
I do not watch movies on my phone though...... (thats what tv is for).
I have however done all day drives with my radio on spotify and the gps running non stop and have not gone over my data plan as of yet, so maybe listening to a music app does not use up as much data as one might think.....
Something to consider......!!
Ps. I don't use Waze for the same reason... it is just too cluttered, it's just too busy.
