I don't think the forum is about being right or wrong. It's about expressing views in a civilized format. It's about realizing that there can be many sides to an issue and respecting others opinions. This thread is a wolf in sheeps clothes. Gun control is a very volatile issue that will bring many points of view.
jarlaxle, how many people have you shot?
All the ban did was drive up the prices of existing gun options. It only banned the sale and manufacture, not the ownership. I'm pretty sure you can still find 30 round clips for anything that had them before. I had one years ago and it was a bunch of fun but on my best day I couldn't give anybody an intelligent reason to own it.
I also believe there is a legitimate need for some people to have a fire arm for self protection. But it is a very small fraction of the people who use that as a reason for gun ownership. You people who are into statistics check and see how many unarmed home owners are killed in burglury attempts compared to armed. I don't remember the exact numbers but you are several times more likely to end up dead if you have a brandish a gun. We have watched way too much TV and think showing a pistol gives us the control in a situation. That armed burgurlar is a survivalist too and probably more comfortable with his weapon in that setting than you will be. As soon as he sees your gun your history. Just owning one is actually more dangerous than not in some cases.
I can see both sides of this issue but if the anti-gun control people want to make an impact they need to champion the education issue so 6 year olds quit killing the neighbor kids with the gun dad left laying around. And locking your guns up so the bad guys can't get their hands on them. It is an age old situation, when we fail to govern ourselves properly big brother steps in with his rules and then we don't like it. I believe in gun ownership, but RESPONSIBLE gun ownership. And I think they should close the gun show loophole that has crippled the responsable gun shops.
there is too much gray area for a right or wrong, itsmore like this: some people have one opinion, and others another...or what is mostly right for our country. who is really to decide? but ill put it this way, i will never give up my guns and while being oh so cliche, they will have to pry them from my cold dead hands. my 2 cents.
This country was not founded on "godly" beliefs! It was founded to excape them. England was pushing "our lord", and people back then wasn't buying. The main reason behind "Church and State".
Pepsi pushing like it is, or assumed to be, is because if noone in this country dies as a result of guns, there will be more people to sell their product to.
Discorabbit, I used to think the same thing until I was challenged on it and really dug into the subject. Actually the first people here still worshipped as Christians. It was the tyranny of the church system in England they wished to escape. Unfortunately they brought some of that mentality with them. A man Named Roger Smith, who founded the baptist church, was tarred and feathered for having church meetings in his home, and he was actually forbid to even go back into a couple states. This was because the founders still thought everything you needed to know about God you should only hear in church. Which was the same attitude that kept the church in England thinking that the average man shouldn't have a bible, he should only be spoon fed their personal version of it. Take a coin out of your pocket and look at it. Do you think a bunch of athiests would have in God we trust. Our U.S. Senate still opens every session with prayer as far as I know. Why do you think you don't work on Sunday. I could go on but I think you get my point. The main reason the separation of church and state was penned into our original constitution was to keep the tyranny of the church out of the business of politics, but not really to keep out Godly principals. Many of the documents from our founding fathers actually have specific references to God. If you really want to know which ones, I will research it and e-mail you, but heated discussions about religion here will just get the thread shut down.
Many of those who came to America early were not escaping religious persecution in the way most of us were taught.
If anything they were more fanatical not less than the average
English person. They wanted freedom to be as "kookie" as they wanted.
The "founding fathers" wanted to separate church from state because many of them weren't particularly religious themselves
but were very familiar with unsavory combination of religion and politics in England as well as other places historically.

I take it that you're not a hunter??? And if guns are outlawed will that apply to our law enforcement too????
Someone pointed out that "cars kill people" too. I think a different way to look at this is:
Cars don't kill people, bad drivers do.
Just as guns don't kill people, people kill people. And just because you take guns away won't stop killing. The way to prevent some accidental shootings is to educate. I did hunters safety when I was 12 but LONG before that my mom and uncles had made sure we know how to handle a gun, knew the dangers of handling a gun, and knew to keep our hands off them unless we were out hunting or target practicing. As kids we played "cops and robbers" and this didn't encourage us to hurt or kill anyone, because we knew the difference between playing and real life.
Gypsyrose:
I totally agree. That was my point in the beginning of this thread. And yea, my father let me know the proper way to handle a gun also.
The ultimate point is this:
If you are taking guns away to prevent death, you're doing nothing. People can kill with anything! Just this of Ouch Yan in Cambodia who died from his "twig 'n' berries" being squeezed to death! How bizzare!
OK, so you take away guns...now you have left murderers, hunters, burglers, etc. with knives? baseball bats? If a burglar came to my house with a knife, I'd be even more fearfull! Hmm, lets see, stabbed to death 23 times or shot in the chest once...I know that sounds a bit vulgar, but that's just how I see it.
HUNTING: How are you gonna hunt a deer with a Louisville Slugger? Or a switch blade? That's just obsurd.
How do you think people lived and still live who don't have access to markets? They had to kill the meat themselves, not to be brutal, but to preserve their way of life. I don't agree with hunting for game or sport. I agree with hunting a deer to sell the meat to people for consumption.
Yes, people need to stop killing one another senselessly with guns. That's a terrible thought that is totally real. If you take the gun away from the killer, he'll still be a killer.
It's like this, "You can take the girl out of the trailor park, but you can't take the trailer park out of the girl." <-- and no, I have nothing against trailor parks.
Getting back to pepsi, they also own doritos. Pepsi I can live without but don't mess with my doritos. I don't care if the president of pepsi is caught clubbing baby seals, I will still eat doritos as long as there is a 7-11
Acid test for IL6: I'll put up a sign in front of my house that says "Forget The Dog-Beware Of Owner" and you can move in next door and put up your sign that says "We Don't Like Guns And We Don't Own Guns" and we'll see who becomes the first crime victim. Then you can explain to me why we don't need guns, assuming you're still alive at that point.
I have no problem with using guns to kill people, as long as the right people get killed (i.e. the criminals).
