I am trying to help my grandfather get his truck fixed. It is a 1993 f150 2wd with a 5.0.

it had been cutting off and wont crank back. If you hold the gas pedal to the floor it would crank with a rough idle then clear back up. Saturday it would not crank back. Turn over hit and rev up then back off. It would do this over and over and then finally it actually started up and idled. Put in gear then cut back off. I pulled it back to the house with a strap.

This afternoon i tried to start it and just turns over not even trying to crank. I spayed starting fluid in the throttle body and still nothing even holding the pedal to the floor. Pulled the coil wire off and dont see any spark. Still trying to get it cranked and out of the blue it decides to fire up. Again with the pedal to the floor. Idled fine. Revs up strong. Running good. Put it in gear and cuts back off. Now wont crank again.

i pulled the codes and got 21 and 34 then 51 and 87 in the continued part. Where should i go from here?

Not sure if im on there or not.

Back to the truck. Today i messed with it. Absolutely will not start by simply turning the key and cranking it over, even with starting fluid. It did however crank every time when i pressed the gas pedal to the floor. Would stumble and idle rough but clear up and run fine. After some research about those symptoms im seeing alot about a bad ECT sensor. I also have code 21 (coolant temp out of specified range) & code 51 ( coolant temp sensor out of specified range).

Do you guys think i have narrowed it down?

it sounds to me like you didn't bring the engine up to full operating temperature before pulling codes. this is a pretty common mistake. try pulling codes after engine is fully warmed up.
