I bought a 1986 Ranger 2.9V6 yesturday. I went and looked at the truck 2 times and it started perfectly. The owner said he had driven it around before I came both times so the engine was slightly warmed up so each time I tried it fired right up. I brought it home and let it sit for about 5 hours and went to start it and all it does is crank and crank and crank. The last time I started it I needed to pump the pedal a few times to get it to fire, but now I have no fire at all. Any ideas on what to look for???
My dad got it running today but it wouldn't start back up after he shut it off. He checked the fuel pressure and a bunch of air came out. Would that mean that there's a hole in the line that goes into the tank or something else??
Sounds like the check valve in the pump is letting the fuel drain back into the tank or the low pressure pump is not working properly.
How did you check the fuel pressure the first time?
How much gas do you have in the tank?
You truck has two pumps, a low pressure pump in the tank and a high pressure pump on the frame rail. When you first turn the key on the pumps will run for a few seconds, see if you can hear both of them.
I checked the fuel pressure by pressing that valve on the fuel rail. It has about 1/4 tank of gas, and it has good spark. I got zapped pretty good. I heard the pump on the rail turn on while we were checking the spark, also I don't know if I mentioned this or not but once while I was driving it started to spit and sputter like it was running out of gas but it stopped after about 15 seconds.
