Hey I have a 74 302 in a 73 F100 that I just rebuilt and am trying to get running but need help with the timing. The engine wants to start but the timing is too off there are 3 dots on the harmonic balancer that I lined the middle one up with the spot on the block and that put the rotor in the distributor close to number 1 piston, or top dead center I think it's not exact but close. as I turn it over and try to get to start it will backfire on me which makes me think the timing is still too far off. any help will be appreciated thank you
Balancers can slip. Pull the number one plug and make certain its at top dead center on the compression stroke. Even using the balancer you can be 180 degrees off.
2x... verify TDC and the reseat the dizzy so its vacuum canister is pointing directly forward and the rotor at #1. That's so ya don't run outta room while setting the timing.
Also verify the plug wires and firing order...1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8.
Btw, backfiring (through the carb) means a cylinder is firing while the intake valve is still open.
3X on verifying Top dead center cylinder # 1 then if you have to restab your distributor try to center the vacuum advance module to where you will have play to adjust left or right
If you rebuilt your motor with a 351 cam then run your spark plug wires to recommended order.
The HO VS standard firing order kicked my neighbors butt until I convinced him to switch from one to the other. It started right up after that and purred like a kitten.
