background: HEI dizzy. 10 before TDC. firing order is right. unit gets power. sometimes backfores sometimes not. im lost now. i need to know how to get the engine to start
Pull number one plug out. Put your finger over the hole while cranking it from the solenoid. When you can feel compression, watch the timing markes on the balancer and put the timing pointer at 10 before TDC. remove the distributor cap and look at where the rotor is pointing. It should be pointing at #1. If not, the dist is in wrong or you need to turn it to line up the rotor with the #1 plug wire.
You can drop it in a 10* btdc, a little before tdc seems to get the advance can pointed pretty straight. After you get it in run it around to zero on the dampener (not 10* btdc) and see if it's pointing at the #1 cylinders tower. Once you get it running with the vacuum advance hose plugged set it at 10-12* to get the initial timing set.
on my 360 i have to advance the timing a lot... clear past the timing marks by an inch or so then dial it back and by the time its set it warms up and i check it with a timing light b/c for some reason these engines sound like they idle faster than what they really are and makes it hard for me by ear. after its warm i put the vacuum adv back on and recheck and readjust slightly. the best way i know to line it up is to pull the 1 plug and stick a pencil in there and find tdc and line up the rotor on number one with plenty of adv and retard room basically in the middle of the range and usually have no problems kicking it off. i mess with the timing so it turns over easily to begin with to get it pumped up on gas and oil esp after an intake job or something
