Hi, I'm new to the forum and hoping for some help. My 2004 powerstroke recently started making a loud knock during the process of starting. Will make the sound warm or cold, however I mostly hear it when the truck is warm as it cranks a little longer and about two seconds into the crank something starts knocking. After the truck starts it runs perfectly fine. And advice would be appreciated.
Fuel pressure reading fine. No problems out of ficm. Generally stays 47-48 volts. All my values I normally look at are reading normal and the truck is running otherwise perfect. No smoke from the exhaust (white or black) and all of my fluid levels are good. The only change I have made recently is going from a custom rune. Vivians looney to the canned act street tune. Anything maybe to do with that ?
So you're saying that the knock is ONLY during cranking the engine BEFORE it starts?
This is a new one for me, but i would suspect the flywheel or starter before anything else. A partially hydrolocked engine, due to cracked EGR cooler is an unlikely suspect, given the lack of issues or smoke while running, but is still possible.
When i had my 1st diesel, a 2001 7.3 powerstroke, i had a similar sound or a grinding, stripped gear sound occasionally when cranking. It ended up being the flywheel.
Just FYI, he has the same thread in the Super Duty forum. Here is something else he says:
"Coolant level and oil are fine. And no smoke from the exhaust unless cold (around 30 degrees here) and even that clears up in just a few seconds. I never encountered this problem until switching to the sct street tune from a custom tune. The only way I can describe it is that the truck will crank normally but around 1 or 2 seconds into it will knock very hard twice and then start and rin normally with no problem."
And...
"Unfortunately I just switched it back to my custom and stock tune and still got the same result"
