Question Cab Design for Transmission

Curious question for the enlightened.

In another post about transmission swaps, a person made mention that the 4WD cabs came with a higher/taller transmission hump than the 2WD ones. Does anyone know if there is any truth to this?

There is.They can be used with some mods. Way easier to do before you put the cab on. Its the tcase that has the issue with clearance. Are you using a 2wd cab on a 4wd, then you have to mod it. If the other way around no problem.

Also believe 2wd trans hump cover is not removable, and 4wd is, for sure. And yes there is a height difference.

So......Is the cab shell actually different, or is it all in the center pan (as in, keep the center pan out of your old cab?)

Floor pan as in the removeable one, I guess it's the "transmission cover" in numberdummys parts page? Sorry to be a bother, I have a nice '74 2wd body that I'm trying to find a 250 4x4 frame for, was thinking it was going to be an easy body swap - making sure that's the truth....

My 74 F-100 2wd has the "high" transmission hump that is removable. I think it's part of having the C6 transmission...

There are basically two transmission "humps" in these trucks. They're often referred to as "high hump" and "low hump versions. You'll see this when you look at replacement carpet.
It's really simple. In the low hump trucks, the transmission tunnel is one piece and not removable. These are 2WD only. The high hump version has a removable tunnel. These are 4WD AND 2WD.
I don't think there was any rhyme or reason in the way Ford determined which 2WD truck got which floor pan. My '73 F100 2WD 360 C-6 has the high, removable hump. My '75 F100 2WD 360 C-6 has the low hump version. Pretty sure all 4 speed 2WD were high humps also.
Either way, if you have a low hump version and need a high hump, it simple to cut out the opening in the floor. The floor pan is stamped with the outline of the removable hump and where the fastener clips go, just be sure to cut about an inch inside the line or the hole will be too big.
Here's a picture of a high hump with the tunnel cover removed and one of the low hump.
