Convert '72 F-250 from 2wd to 4wd

I appologize if this has already been dealt with and I am new to the older Fords and this site. I am looking at purchasing a 1972 2wd crew cab. I really want and partially need 4wd. From what I am being told, I would need the transfer case, driveline, rear driveline mod, front axle, linkage.

What else would I need?
Would most everything bolt up or modifications - major or minor?
Any modifications to the original transmission necessary? (Curretn 4 spd manual)
What years are similar that parts could be used from?
I estimate 1,500 - 2,500 in parts, would that be correct?
I have heard from 2 people that the 2wd frames are different from the 4wd frames.

Welcome to FTE!

This is a pretty common question, and it came up just a few weeks ago. Here's a link to the discussion, it should probably answer most of your questions...
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...t-posible.html

Here's a link to an (overpriced, imho) 4x4 crew cab...

Good luck with your new truck!

Thank you for the links. It sounds like swapping is much easier, the problem I tend to run across is finding the 4wd crew cabs in which to swap the bodies over on. When I do find a 4x4 crew cab, it is similar to the one you attached, expensive, much outside of where I can go at this time. I found the 2wd in good shape for a cheap price, but I want the 4x4. Thanks for the help it is greatly appreciated.

Is the frame different between a crew cab and a single cab? I guess cab mounts would differ, but I mean length, width, bends, etc. Is it as simple as just finding a good single cab 4x4 frame to drop your crewcab body onto?
Bill? JoWilker? Any of the other smart guys?

The crew cab frame is longer...standard single cab long wheelbase is 131 inches, an F250 crew cab is 149". In this case, considering availability (or the lack thereof) of a 4X4 crew cab chassis in his area it might indeed make more sense to convert the existing truck to 4X4. I think it might make more sense than the somewhat dicey option of stretching a single cab 4X4 frame to fit the crew cab.
