Could someone please help. My 2001 SuperCrew (5.4 & 4X4), only 500 miles after the warranty expired, had its Check Engine light turn on. I had it checked at AutoZone and a Mechanic and they both confirmed the only code to be a low voltage reading on the MAF/VAF Sensor.
The mechanic cleaned the sensor but it had no effect. Since his recommendation was to change the MAF Sensor, I ordered a Granatelli sensor and a K&N filter and put them on myself.
It did not work. I think the truck is peppier but the light is still on. I did leave the battery unhooked for a while to reset the system. The truck hesitates on depressing the accelerator but runs.
- MAF sensor disconnected
- MAF circuit open to PCM
- VPWR open to MAF sensor
- PWR GND open to MAF sensor
- MAF RTN circuit open to PCM
- MAF circuit shorted to GND
- Intake air leak (near MAF sensor)
- A closed throttle indication [throttle position (TP) sensor system]
- Damaged MAF sensor
- Damaged PCM
I first noticed this when I had to depress the accelerator about 1" before the truck reacted (no smooth starts from a light). Could this point to the TPS? Where is it located if it does?
AegisSailor: I should have followed your line of thinking. I gave up and took the truck to another mechanic. After about an hour he found that the source of the problem was a family of mice creating a nest under the air filter box (never saw it) and they were using wiring to build the nest. The wire to the ECM was chewed off completely.
