If you look at the VIN tag on your door there are codes for springs, transmission, paint colors etc.
On the tag you will see TR. Under that there will be either a U or E.
The U means you have an AOD/4R70W transmission.
The E means you have an E4OD/4R100 transmission.
Other than that they will need to know that it's a 4x4.
Dave, When the dealer does the 30,000 mile( not sure in Km) tranny service, what all is involved besides changing the filter and fluid.
Also, does the torque converter have a drain plug too? It's kinds pointless to change the few quarts in the pan when most of the fluid is actually in the converter?
Jimmy
All that you can do in a tranny service is change the oil and filter. There are no adjustments anymore.
Yes the convertor has a drain plug. You pop the round rubber plug out of the bottom of the bellhousing and then turn the engine over until the drain plug is there. It takes quite a while to drain all the oil out of it.
Justin, most of these trucks that come with the towing package come with an extra tranny cooler. I don't think that they need 2 external coolers. But for the few that don't, it is a good idea to add one.
When I took my 2000 in for Trans. serv. the dealer said all that is needed is for the trannny to be BACKFLUSHED, and converter ATF.changed. But now a year later I changed the Trans pan with an Aluminun pan that is deeper and I changed the filter myself.
My 5.4 eng. has a E40D trans that is more retangler and the 70type tranny that is usually behind the diesel is a longer odd shaped pan.
Sounds like you have the 4R100 tranny. It's supposed to be better than the 4R70W. I think that is what our 2000 F250 has in it here at work. The converter stalls higher than mine (gets into the torque curve of the engine faster) and shifts at a higher rpm than mine (again, to keep the engine in the powerband). If I ever get another truck, it will have the 4R100 with 3.73 gears.
Jimmy
A 4R100 is an updated E4OD and it looks the same. It is used behind some 5.4s, V10s and diesels. The 4R70W is an updated AOD and looks the same. It is used behind the 4.6 and some 5.4s.
