wiper/washer separation

I'm curious if anyone has figured out how to modify the wiper control module on, for example, my 94 F 350 with delay wipers so that the button on the end of the stalk only activates the washers when pushed. I've done this to several other vehicles (not Fords) successfully and it works great here in the Northeast to thoroughly wet the windshield before manually activating the wipers so that you avoid much of the smearing and the first dry swipe or two. I've had the wiper control module apart but I'm not sure how to isolate the washer from the wiper, or if it is even possible considering that the wiper functions are evidently controlled by the module reading resistance in the wiper/washer switch itself, and it appears that there is a chip in there in addition to what appear to be three relays. Any ideas?

Never seemed like a problem to me. I don't recall my '94 Bronco having a dry wipe or two. Are the nozzles not spaying correctly or is the pump weak?

IMO the wipers should not start until you release the button.. give you time to soak the windshield.

good info

Thanks for the information. I never noticed that the wipers didn't start until the button was released. Evidently my pump, nozzles, etc. are good. My question still is the actual separation of the functions, as much for the technical challenge as anything. I just prefer the two things to be independent of each other. Once in a while I've misjudged temperature and smeared my w/s with a layer of ice before the defroster caught up. An experimental squirt, without automatic wiper operation as a follow-up, to test the freeze potential would have been nice in those instances. I changed my Subaru to operate separately, as well as a couple of older vehicles, and I just like it that way (you can tell I'm old, set in my ways, and stubborn!)

would be nice to spray the windshield without the wipers starting. In my plow truck, I keep an old Windex spray bottle of windshield wiper fluid and just spray that on when i get tough ice build ups

That may be the simplest, most practical solution of all!
