A zip tie around the right hinge is all you need. Tailgate thefts are rampant because they are easy to lift off and carry away. The thief will try once or twice to lift your gate off and then walk away.
Isn't is enough to just locking your tailgate with the OEM lock provided?
No, a thief that knows anything about these trucks will be around the factory lock in seconds. They may destroy it, but the latch and lock is cheap compared to the tailgate. They get the tail lights with the tailgate a lot off the 08^ trucks.

I have a locking fiberglass tonneau cover on mine. If I didn't have that I'd do the hose clamp trick.
I didn't think about the taillights. 4 screws and 2 plugs and away they go too...
I, too, am using the McGard product...... Tailgate Lock
When I bought my 2015 SuperDuty the dealer mentioned the tailgate theft problem and said a replacement would be upwards of $2,500, so twenty bucks doesn't seem like too much of an insurance policy.
Foolproof? Probably not, but thieves are generally lazy and will try to pick the low-hanging fruit. This may make it just enough more trouble that they'll look for an easier victim. Same goes for some of the other solutions mentioned here.
how does the hose clamp idea work, i can't tell from the pic how that keeps it from being removed when it's installed. can someone go into detail on that for me to help me understand it? thanks in advance!
Goes around the passenger side hinge, keeping you from being able to pick tailgate up out of the hinge and removing it. Drivers side hinge is not open on top, so in order to remove the tailgate, the passenger side comes up and the whole thing slides towards the passenger side to get out of the drivers side hinge.
Tuffy makes a good tailgate lock also, and they have a bracket to prevent anyone from opening your hood from the outside. First thing I do to my new trucks.
By the way does anyone know of an electric lock you can install on the tailgate? I put one on my 2008 250 with the step, but it was a major pia to install and was problematic over the years. Thanks for any input.
Most of this is just making it take time for the criminal, the longer it takes the better chance of catching them in the act. The only problem is the longer it takes if they are insisting on getting it the more Damage they will do trying to get it. The good thing is most will give up right away once they see it's going to take time.
