Ok, I bought this 74 F100 as a project and I'm ready to get started. It will be my daily driver when it's finished. I'm looking to overhaul and beef up the factory 360 2bbl. It runs pretty good now after new plunge, wires, cap etc... Only thing I I can find wrong with it is leaking valve stem seals and a blown header gasket. I need help/ideas on what to do with it. I enjoy doing most of the wrench work myself, but I'm not educated on things like cam sizing. I know I want a good choppy idle and low end power. Not looking to build a race rod. Just a nice head turner. The tranny is a C6 and the rear end is 3.00 if I decoded the VIN correctly.
Since no one has chimed in I will throw my 2cents in.
1. I would find a crank and rods and convert to a 390.
2. Ditch those terrible flowing logs and get headers.
3. After market aluminum 4bbl intake and 600'ish CFM carb.
4. RV cam
If you insist on keeping it a 360 do everything above except #1.
Thanks. I'm not against converting to a 390. Plan on tearing down to the block anyway. It has headers now but they're pretty old. I'll be replacing them. And the 2bbl carb and intake are getting scrapped as soon as I decide what to replace them with.
I agree with the other guys. I have a eldebrock performer on my 390. I really wish I would have used a performer rpm. If the your headers are still in good shape except for the rust maybe get them sandblasted and repaint to save some coin? I have a summit brand can in mine part number sum k34052. The engine has more than enough torque. But it has a fairly smooth idle. I would use that cam for a good reliable driver and it reasonably priced. Just my 2cents
The 360 FE engine can be upgraded to a 390 by replacing the crank, rods and pistons (reciprocating assembly). If you go that route, take care to compare the total cost of buying and machining used parts with a new Scat reciprocating assembly. There are several standard options up to c. 445 CID to choose from.
Because it is a thin wall casting, you are limited to 0.060 oversize bore so check on that before committing to anything extensive and expensive.
