Can anyone give me a ballpark figure of what I could expect from my 360 rebuild. I'm looking at rebuilding the heads including decking for a little compression, intake, 4bbl. and headers and of course a good ignition system. What type of hp/torque could I expect?
gonna be hard to say not many people keep these motors who really want HP.i have a 360 and its about 280 with 550 2bbl and hood headers cam but very strong
280? That sound pretty high for a 360. I know my 360 didn't have anywhere near that and I'm thinkin just poppin a cam in isn't gonna do the trick. I was told my 390 will put out 356hp. Thats a 390 with high lift cam, headers, and 4v carb.
Certified net was only 179 hp back in 68 with a 2 barrel 360, it would take more than a cam besides that lack of quench of a 360 to get anywhere near your posted numbers. hell your 280 hp number would be good for a strong running 390 with todays crappy gas.
If I was going to keep the motor a 360ci. what would be the best way to increase the compression ratio to around 9.5 to 1, and what would be the best piston to use? Forged or hyper?
Best move for power increase would be to get a 390 crank and rods, stay with the 360 pistons and add the 4 barrel and good cam and headers. That would be the best bang for the buck, by far.
if your going to put a new crank in go ahead and put a 428 crank in it. that'll give you a 410. The only other difference is that it is externally balanced instead of internally. Huge gains in hp and especially tq. and it will bring you right up to quench so it's better all around.
Due to the retarded cam timing on these engines what cam and gear combo should I go with? i'm looking on doing a full rebuild, I want to go with a cam a little bigger than stock but nothing to out run the low compression.
call up the cam manufacturer and tell them what you got and what youre doing. they will help you with the timing of the cam and then you just run a standard gear set. the cam grind you get will have the right timing ground into it. ask lots of questions, if they are not willing to explain call someone else. if you dont want to scrounge up the 390 crank and rods, you will be letting go some of the potential of the motor. with that said, you can still get a respectable build if you do it right. compression and mostly cam are the two keys here.
to give you an other option for cam companies, www.camresearchcorp.com or 303-762-0022 they specialize in fords.

Retarded cam timing is only an issue with 1972 and later engines. Any proper rebuild requires a new timing chain and always get the early chain replacement set.
