Hey guys and gals, I have a 95 f150 4x4 with a front diff thats acting up when in 4x4, and I want to just swap the whole thing out for a used one. (when in 4x4 with the hubs locks, it jumps in and out of 4x4 when there is a load on it, I havent taken it apart yet, past taking the locking hubs off, and Im assuming the axle/s may be stripped)
Truck is a farm truck, not interested in completely rebuilding it.
Anyways I was curious if any of you out there knew if there were any particular years that would or wouldnt work for this truck? Either for a complete swap, or maybe even just axles?
I did give it a quick test, and it appeared to be fine, but if thats what you are suggesting, i will dig into it a little more.
It has an electric shift transfer case, and i have 3-4 spare manual shift ones, go figure haha.
Yeah I think you need to first determine if the problem is with the t-case or the front axle, and if it is the axle then is it just one of the hubs(easy fix).. and note the auto hubs are notorious for breaking, or is it a stripped spline or a broken differential. If it is one of the later problems then swapping the whole axle may be quicker... depends if you have the equipment and tools handy to do the job.. getting the big nuts off the suspension attachment points is not something that can be accomplished with a 1/2" ratchet set.
As for what axles will work I think anything from around '87 to the end of production in '97 will bolt right in although Ford changed the brake caliper mounting style somewhere in there('92 maybe) so you may want to narrow the focus a little bit.
EVERYTHING checked out fine, or so I thought. I disassembled the locking hubs as much as possible, and i found that someone was in there before, and had the internal "gear" installed backwards. It would engage and work fine, till there was a big load, then it would slip.
So I cleaned the hubs out (they were maybe a little overgreased), flipped that "gear" around, and she works like a charm.
Lesson learned, FULLY disassemble and check, before saying that they checked out haha.
