It's just a matter of paying for the kit and putting it in really. The hardest part is getting the two plastic insets out of the way (without breaking them) so you can get to the two front bezel screws. The only thing that doesn't work is the vehicle health report, I'm shedding no tears over that. You do have to tap power for the new media center, but it is non-destructive/invasive otherwise.

The touch screen is capacitative, not resistive so much more responsive to a light touch, everything is way faster including the voice prompts, and you can almost always figure out what to do without wondering "what the hell were they thinking?". I will say that Apple CarPlay is a bit of a disappointment, but perhaps they will improve it with time.

^ Yes. Not sure how much programming has to be done to the APIM, but I gave him (OEM Radio Solutions) my VIN and it came all set up. My truck is a Lariat, and all those functions work perfectly - better than Sync 2 in most respects. Jesse there (I think he is OEM Radio Solutions) is *very* knowledgable about Sync 2 and 3, and what has to be done. It does the automatic WiFi updates, talks to everything just like it came from the factory that way. There was one other thing I forgot to mention: The new GPS antenna (Sync 3 does not use the GPSM module) has a connector that just interferes with a plastic fin on the dashboard tray. This has to be clipped out for clearance. It cannot be seen from anywhere but inside the dashboard - but it is a small bit of butchery.

When I said "not perfect" above I didn't mean it doesn't work just like it does in a 2017 - just that Sync 3 has room to improve as well.

Neat... Although I need the Vehicle Heath Report to get my low insurance rates. They make me do one and then they get it from Ford. It's a no-go for me until that bug is worked out.

Quick question is what did this all cost?

Don't think so? - Facebook and a lot of Youtube stuff, this one for example which has his email in it. It's not the Ford truck upgrade in the video - on mine it all just plugs into existing harnesses, except for 2 wires to power the USB hub.

There are three sources than I know of. 4DTech doesn't really seem to have them in stock, rumor has it that infotainment.com may get them from OEM Radio (and they put me on hold for 15 minutes till I hung up). The service from OEM Radio was fantastic, very quick to ship and when I had a problem with the first GPS antenna it was instantly replaced. Emails and phone calls returned within minutes, and very knowledgeable. With navigation, everyone is about the same price at around $2K. No, that isn't cheap, but life's too short to be annoyed by Sync 2. The things in the 2017 I was going to miss were the keyless ignition and Sync 3. Now I just need to retrofit the keyless ignition....

i am wondering how one updates the GPS maps on Sync 3. Sync 3 in my parents 2016 Escape does not use the SD card for maps. The last time I checked, no one seems to know how the maps will be updated.

Sync 3 in many of the latest production vehicle models allows you to do remote start via cellphone using FordPass. Not sure what changes are required to make this happen on the earlier versions of Sync 3 such as the 2016 Escape or 2017 Super Duty come with.

I mentioned 4Dtech above. A little higher price and they don't actually seem to have them.

The maps in Sync 2 are stored on an SD card. On Sync 3 they are stored in internal flash memory. To update, you will connect to the internet with WiFi and update directly from navigation.com (for a price, of course). There are currently no updates for Sync 3. Since Sync 3 is based on the Blackberry QNX system (a version of linux), Ford isn't a totally unique product - Mercedes, Volvo, BMW, LandRover, Acura, etc. also use the system, so it is unlikely to be orphaned soon.

Some of the data features (like real remote start) require a subscription and perhaps the cellular modem option in the new trucks. I think to get those you need to order a new truck that way.

I have not seen any reference to fees on the FordPass website for remote start ability.

I just talked with a FordPass rep and at this time there are not any fees. The usual disclaimer being, it might change in the future.

One needs the Sync3 Connect version to use the lock/unlock/remote start which is only available on 3 or so select vehicles at this time.

I think the Connect version itself involves fees. With the Connect you have a cellular modem serviced by ATT (one of the two least high tech, high tech companies) and there is a monthly fee to keep it alive. Perhaps nothing on top of that for FordPass. At least that's what I understood.

Let me tell you from experience, you do not want to depend upon ATT in the new England states including PA (other than right inside city limits), or out west.
