Ever since I bought my 79 Bronco I have an extremely hard time rolling up the window. It feels like it catches and won't roll up and it looks like the crank is wobbling. I've decided to just replace the entire regulator. Anyone know of a decent aftermarket one or should I just look for a used replacement? I'm not sure if it's bolted or riveted on? And what else should be replaced while I'm at it?
I checked Bronco graveyard and it was only $35 but $30 for shipping. Yeah no thanks
Double check on that shipping cost. Sounds way out of the box. DC is $10 for shipping.
You may want to pull the regulator and look it over. I have been able to clean up the teeth with a file and fix hang up spots on the gear teeth. It might be riveted, but you can just drill those out and replace with fasteners.
Be careful removing the door panel those metal clips or the Xmas tree push buttons ones can be a PIAT to get out. Great time to have a door panel pop tool.
Then pull it out insp & over haul it if you can. If not have a quality replacement on hand.
Insp the plastic collar wheel for flat spots and make sure and lube the track at the bottom of the window that roller wheel goes in.
With the door panel off it might be a great time to replace the antirattle gaskets on both sides of the glass. and or any others that are dry rotted, torn, flat and brittle.
I had just purchased and installed part number F462914 from Carparts.com for only $24 a couple weeks ago but it seems no one has it anymore. The price has shot through the roof everywhere. It's crazy. I don't get it. You can bet I will keep it nice and greased. Holy moly!
A spray can of white grease may be all you need...you can hose down the regulator mechanism and track rollers pretty well without unriveting the regulator. Spray, work the regulator, respray... will probably start to work much more smoothly. Oh, and clean the overspray off the window.
I took my driver's side regulator out while I was replacing the window scrapers/felt channels. The symptom was the window was a little catty corner when rolling up. It seemed to bind. Come to find out, the regulator would only stay in one position as though it was sprung. Has anyone ever come across this? I am replacing it with a LMC regulator but want to know if the original can be reworked and saved in any manner. Thanks
Easy enough to replace the regulator. Be very careful when pulling the door panel, as the mounting points for the clips will be very brittle. The regulator is probably installed with three rivets, which can be drilled out.
I bought a new dorman regulator off ebay ($36.70 and free freight), and some mounting bolts at the hardware store. The regulator came with rivets, but they're 1/4", and I didn't want to buy the big rivet tool.
Use some white lithium grease on the wheel when reinstalling.

Reason: added ebay purchase info
My driver side does this. I opened the door and found that the metal channel which the plastic roller moves in, was rusty. Haven't gotten to it yet because it started raining, but plan to wire wheel it clean.
