Got a 79 f150.... And i have a really annoying problem with the crank windows.... They dont go up and down smoothly.... To get them to work well i have to change the position of the pane in the hole with a hand.... I know the previous owner did the window rubber with jc whitney stuff about five years back..... Maybe that stuff was not that good.... Any thoughts on where i should buy or what i should do to trouble shoot this...
I don't quite understand what's actually happening based on your description - but most window problems are due to dried up felts, or a worn gear in the regulator. Or both.
It's pretty simple, your right the felts are just not as good as the originals.
I am on my 2nd set from LMC and it's time to try "Dennis Carpenter". l hope to find better. As they get thinner the glass becomes unstable. It's not the regulator.
That track is pretty greasy, and its exactly like Stinky is talking about where the opening IMHO is now to wide for the window and then the pain get cocked in the opening and drags so it doesnt operate smoothly, but if I take a hand and straighten the pain in the opening its works fine..... I guess its try dennis carpenter.... see if they stock 'em
You can buy inner/outer felt "belt weatherstrips" (anti-rattlers-not Ford terminology) at any autoglass shop. They come in 3' lengths and have to be 'cut to fit.' The clips are also available.
These are supposed to be tight to the door glass, as besides keeping the windows from rattling, another function was to keep water from leaking into the doors.
They also serve as window wipers in rainy/snowy conditions when the glass is cranked up.
Reproduced by Dennis Carpenter, 2011 paper edition of his 1967/79 repro truck parts catalog (page 87): $45.00 a pair. You need two pairs, one for the right, one for the left.
btw: The window rollers have a nasty habit of breaking, causing the glass to fall down into the door. Carpenter has the rollers and they're still available from Ford.
I have a 79 and the window felts are all but gone and my windows roll up and down fine. Based on that I am not sure your problem is the window felts...
to me, it sounds like one of the mounting points for your window regulator is not fastend properly.
loose bolt or missing rivet type problem. the only way the window can try to rotate inside the window track is if there is something loose in one of the mounting points.
I agree my 79 the rubbers are almost gone
and whats left is hard and crumbly but the
glass goes up and down great
if the track that holds the bottom of the
windowis loose it will slide and the
glass will tip and jam some silicone will fix

My windows both went up and down perfect the felts just looked bad but if you tried to move the window side to side you could not! The replacment runner felts sit deeper in the channels so they allow the window to shift. I took my truck to the local auto glass guy to find me a better rear window gasket because the LMC gasket is not going to work with my new slider but that's another thread, they also think the runner felts do not hold the window snug. I was able to put a narrow strip of plastic behind the rear runner felt and it works well. The glass guy is going to order some that he thinks will be better.
When I replaced my vent windows I noticed a tiny amount of play in the track before I finished tightening the bolts/screws. I haven't played around with the rear window track yet but guessing it may be the same.... The point being is that it might not hurt to try and tweak this a bit. Careful though as this will also affect the position of the vent and the seals that go with it.

I also looked into tweaking the rear track but that will only address the lower part and if i find better runners it will have to be reversed.
If you take your tracks out look for obvious issues like bends, twists, or cracks.... Its hard to imagine how this could have happened unless there was some body damage of sorts but worth considering if you have ruled other stuff out.

In my case it's bad runners/after market junk, my truck still has original paint with no damage, the OP could have a different issue but it sounds much the same
