I have an 01 f250 with 4" exhaust, 6637 mod and a PHP tuner that I just installed. It has pillar mounted ex temp, boost and trans gauges. I have since drove from Mich to FL towing an Explorer on a dolly. Truck ran great but I can't make up my mind what tune to run while traveling. I seem to lean toward 80hp modified trans, but 100hp 120 was about the same. I don't push it hard just take it easy and do the 70mph speed limit.
I was wondering what tune other PHP users liked to travel in?
I am a DP guy, and 99% of my driving is done in the 80E tune. If you are towing a load that 120 tune may be a bit hot on exhaust gas temps, but the biggest thing is drive by your gauges. If the tranny temp and EGT gauge are in the green, you should be all good.
An Explorer isn't that heavy and doesn't provide anywhere near the wind resistance that an RV would so you're really not taxing the motor much at all, even pulling a grade.
As Jason said, as long as the EGTs are in check you can run it whatever tune you like. When you towing heavier and bigger you will probably find that the lower HP tunes are the only ones you can use.

HI,
I didn't notice any trans mods in your signature, do you have a modified valve body in the trans? If not, you may want to try the same tunes without Modified valve body. I believe they were designed more around the stock transmission.
I usually run the 80 econ tune but have towed with the 120 race tune a couple of times just because lol, like was said just keep an eye on the EGT's & run whichever tune suits you. I'm a big fan of Bill's tunes
Only time EGT got over 600 was if I was really trouncing on it up a hill in the mountains then it never got over 1000 and I'm not sure it was even that high. I just happened to glance at it as I got over one of the biggest hills. Boost was 2-4 on the flat and not over 12-15 up hills. The truck hardly knew there was something behind it. I don't intend to travel pulling heavy campers or anything. Just my daily use and travel to Fl pulling the extra car once a year.
I used the modified trans tune because I liked the timing of the trans shifts better. It wants to rev to 2500 and never shift until I back off the go pedal. "My 96 was the same way until I put the ts chip in it."
Before leaving home I had it up in 140hp and punched it. I'm sure glad the seatback was strong. I just wasn't ready for THAT. The one to two shift was good and strong and it took off like a raped ape. It was ready to go. I'm 54 and like to play some but I mostly just use it for what I intended it for, a farm truck.
As far as I know the truck is stock except for as noted above. I just bought it Dec 9 and we are still getting to know each other. I was wondering if you all found better mileage or drive-ability in certain tunes.
Really I like the shifts in the 120 race tune the best, the shifts in the 65 tow are pretty firm for my tastes but I was told by PHP that they are safe. Like I said I usually run in the 80 econ tune & cruising on the highway I do get just a little better mileage #'s in the 120 race but the difference is only about .5 to .75 mpg
80 HP tune - 400 HP tune... it's all the same. These numbers mean nothing without fuel mods (injectors), because the stock injectors have 60-65 HP in reserve from stock tuning. Does anybody here really believe the engineers built a 240 HP engine to have 360 HP with a simple tweak of some numbers in the programming?
If you like the shifting of one tune over the other, I have learned that is more from an "attitude" your transmission has adopted over the years - and no two trucks are alike any more.
For optimum performance (0-60 time, not SOTP), I'd stick with a 60-65 HP tune and the EGTs are likely to stay in check. I have seen countless 60 HP tunes with more acceleration and lower EGTs than 80 HP tunes because of the way our HEUI injectors work.
Here's what I have and how I use them (for the most part):
Stock - warmup to normal operating temp (minimum 150F oil temp and 100F trans temp) and getting close to home/stopping
80 Daily Driver - Highway and Sunday (lazy) driving
80 Performance - Daily driving, traffic, commuting, and occasionally passing a Geo Metro on the freeway onramp
100 Race - Used it twice and didn't notice much difference (I have stock sticks so, as Tugly said, nothing to gain)
65HP Moderate Tow - Traffic, hilly drives, and, duh, towing
40HP Heavy Tow - off-roading
I probably spend 80% of my time in 80HP Performance. You can use any of them however you want. The name of the tune just tells you it's personality and characteristics. Sure that's what the programmer(s) had in mind when writing it but it's your choice to use them as you want.
Mine a DP F5 but I like the tow tunes. I found in my 60 tow I get the best mileage and like you said the shifts are much better. By that I mean, how they keep you in the power bands. I even use it more now around town. I use to use the 60E because the 80E was to touchy. Any way just watch your EGT's for sure no matter what tune your in.
I use the the 80 daily driver most of the time for everything. The the tow mode when hauling trailer. Mine is the PHP chip forever updates. Have been happy for the most part have to watch the exhaust temps at times. Also always use the no start.
