I've never run into this before so I'm hoping for some advice. My new to me 1973 F100 will not shut the engine off with the key. The engine is a stock 360 with points ignition. When the key is turned off it kills things like the fan motor and radio, but the engine continues to run. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
A bad solenoid will do that too. Next time it does that, give the solenoid a whack. If it shuts off replace the solenoid. And my advise is to pay extra and get the premium replacement.
Well I finally got some time to look at this problem. I replaced the ignition switch and the starter solenoid and it still will not turn the engine off when it is warm. As long as the engine is cold, initial start up, the switch will turn the engine off. But after it warms up the engine stays running when the key is off and the power to the cluster is off when the key is off. Any ideas?
So I have seen this 1 out of 1000 times but it has happened to me before. Add a rectifier diode, at least 3A to your alternator exciter wire -or- run the exciter wire straight to your ignition switch ACC output. This will isolate the circuit and remove any feedback that may be keeping your engine running. A rectifier diode, $0.45 at radio shack, is basically an electronic check valve only allowing electricity to run one way to your alternator therefore a charge cannot return to your ignition system.
