I've been having trouble with pickup dying while going down the road. Changed the CPS 5 days ago and drove it yesterday and it did the same thing again. Searched forums and haven't found anything different than replace the CPS again, don't want to keep chasing after the same part if it keeps doing the same thing each time. Any suggestions or a forum that has anything like this on it?
Along the CPS line, was it raining by chance when it is doing this? Are you using FORD CPS's or aftermarket? Many of the aftermarket version have had issue when it rains. I personally experienced this with one I tried.
Other than that, is it throwing any codes? I would think if it is shutting down you should see a code(s).
Your initial stement (header) said dies while pulling the 5th wheel. Is it only under that kind of load or other circumstances as well? If only under a heavy load the fuel pump, in- tank screens, dirty fuel filter or some other fuel delivery issues come to mind.
Dying while going down the road is also a classic symptom of the IPR becoming sensitive to hot, thinner oil. Does it restart right away, or do you have to wait a bit (for the oil to cool and thicken)?
I have to wait around 30 minutes and then it will restart. I've had an Autozone CPS on it and it died just like before then I replace the CPS with a CPS from the dealer (OEM Genuine Ford Parts) and it did it again. Only got 5 miles on the new sensor, so I'm thinking it's something else, possibly the IPR.
I would pull the IPR and clean it really good. It does come apart. Be careful to put it back together correctly. Get some new o-rings from Bob over at Dieselorings.com, and it will likely solve your problem unless the solenoid on the IPR has gone bad. It is a cheap and easy step to figure out what is going on. Pick up a cork or rubber plug to stuff in the hole the IPR lives in, or all the oil in your HPOP reservoir will flow out into the engine valley.
I just watched a video of a guy pulling his IPR and he used a soap pump head to pump out the HPOP oil into a cup. Very clever. Does pulling the IPR take a special tool or just some careful ingenuity?
Yep, you need a big deep socket. I did that two weeks ago. Suck the oil out. put some paper towel in the valley to catch the rest. I think it is a 29mm socket. You have to remove a few electrical connectors to get clearance. My problem was the thing would not come apart after i removed it! I finally gave up and put it in the vice. That worked, its not as pretty any more. I cleaned it and it was not dirty, new seals. I did not put any oil in it. Just slightly oiled it. connected everything. put the oil back. I fired it up and the truck ran like crap! I took it for a rump. By time I got home It was OK! Ran to lake Skinner on Sat. No codes, not issues. It was windy and she only got 14MPG towing a 1500 boat at 61 mpg. Make sure you watch the video before you work on it.
Thanks for the info Nicmike. I haven't tried the battery thing. It could solve another issue I've had for about 7 months. Door ajar light stays on. Have no ability to lock or unlock with remote. Radio stays on for 10 minutes after shutoff and door open. Interior lights only come on after key shutoff and door open, they won't come on when opening door to get in. Lots of issues that have to be linked to electrical. I've also heard of changing out the ignition switch part under the dash (not the column switch).

Depending on your year model these sound like GEM module issues. Been in the rain much?
The rubber around my windshield won't stay down so it may leak some. I've been trying to get the radio out (have a CD stuck in it) so I can check the VSM, where would the GEM be located? I've got IC codes of U1027, B1352, U1950 and U1262. I've also got PCM code of P0603, also OTC codes of P0500 and U2015. Lots of codes not much info and which one is the problem and is it causing the other problems or all the problems making a combined affect on my pickup. Trying to figure this out without spending a ton of money on stuff that doesn't need to be fixed.
