If you have an 02, you don't have a GEM. Those were in 99-01 trucks and Excursions.

I've looked at all the wiring and connectors under the hood and all seem to be fine, no frays or exposed wiring. Isn't the VSM behind the radio and, if so, how do you get the radio out to get to it? Other than that, I don't know what else to look at unless diesel is coming out of the filter area and getting a connection soaked and getting hot and shutting things down. I'm open to anything to try and find out what's going on with my truck.

Some have diagnosed an IPR solenoid going bad when it gets hot by keeping a cup of ice or can of spay air in the truck. When it dies cool the IPR solenoid and see if it starts back up right away
