When i was on my way home today the truck started to miss like it wasnt getting fuel the check engine light came on is this a sign that the cps is getting ready to go out it still has the orignal one in it also when i got looking under the hood the red wire that goes from the glow plug relay to the spider was broke at the spider i replaced it but didnt make any diff.
Clif, the CPS usually kills the truck like you turned the key off. Get the recall done for the CPS. Get the codes read and let us know what they are. Can't really tell what the problem is without the codes.
When my CPS acted up it would make the truck kind of cough, like a small intake backfire on an old gasser. Did that a few times a couple of miles apart and threw the CEL, but never died.
I'm with Rick about getting the free CPS from the recall. Getting the codes read would tell you for sure, but that's gonna cost money unless you can convince Ford to do it as part of the recall.
Im going to try to get the recall done tomorrow I will post tomorrow night on whats going on. I did check the oil and the fuel filter is is new put it in last week barry. Also will a scaner that you buy for like $100 scan a diesel or should i have the dealer do it and what should i exspect to pay to have the dealer do it and should i pull the chip out of it if the dealer scans it i heard that i can erase it if you leave it in. Thanks alot guys
A generic scanner will probably not read our codes. You need one that says it will read them. Yes, pull the chip if you have the dealer do any codes unless you know they want screw something up. You do need to have your codes read to be sure what the problem is.
I've heard the dealer charges around $90 for a scan, an independent shop with the proper scanner a little less. An AE scanner for these trucks cost just under $350. I've heard you can find a used Superchips on ebay for around $200 that will pull codes, but it won't do any data logging.
Sorry it took so long! Just got my truck back today from having the recall done seams to be running a little better but still has something awrong with it. Seams like it is starving for fuel. You was right chris 90 to 100 dollars to put it on a scaner at the stealership. The guy told me that if it was behind on an oil change (has anyone ever heard of this)that it will make it run bad and turn the check engine light on it is a little behind on an oil change so i am giong to try that first. The mech where i work said he had a scaner that will pull our codes so if the oil change dont work im going to run it down to him on friday.
Clean, full oil is vital to these engines since that's what powers the injectors, but if you have the proper weight oil and it's full, being a little over in miles will not cause a problem. The wrong or low oil can cause problems just as quickly as a plugged up fuel filter.
Tell me more about the red wire that's disconnected. I'm not too good with colors, but is it a wire or a plastic tube? How many other wires connect to the spider at this plug, and where on the spider does it connect? Just trying to understand which wire you're talking about.
Chris it is a red wire that goes from the relay to a stud in the left side of the spider ive seen pics on here of pepole putting the boost gauge tube in it then there is a wire that goes to the right side of the engine right below the valve cover pan in the valley. In your gallery under helpfull photos the pic that is in the 3rd row down 3rd in. The stud that im talking about is just left of the bracket that has the plug and vac lines on it . Ive changed my oil and filter with no change. I have had it on 3 scaners today all 3 said thet there was no code the check engine light still is on . The one place that i took it was a truck performance garage that does alot of work on diesels there scaner said that it had no code the mech took a quick ride in it for me and said it deffently had a miss and that he would check the oil pressure that opens the fuel injecters to see if it had enuff psi to open the injectors up all the way and to check th injectors any thoughts on this.
If you look to the left of the 2 vacum lines for the wastgate and to the right of the ic boot there is a stud and nut there you can only see half of it the wire that is in it was the on that was broke
That is you AIH (air intake heater), A lot of us, including me, have removed ours. Just don't let that broken wire ground out to anything. I shouldn't have anything to do with your trucks running.
Did you get any codes with the removal Barry. I agree it won't affect the way the engine runs, unless it's grounding out and causing a short. Then who knows with all this electrical stuff on engines now.
Do you have a CA truck Clif? That could explain the check engine light.
