I need to replace the steering gear box on my 73 f250 2wd. Anyone out there have any tips or procedures on doing this to make it a bit easier? Do I need a gear puller? thanks
Just jack up the driver side of the truck,,, remove tire,, there are three bolts i think holding the box to the frame,, remove the bolts holding the column attachment together,, remove the steering lines if you have them,, a pickle fork is helpful for getting the end off. cant remember what that is called
Like was said, I also use a pickle fork (tuning fork) to separate the pitman arm from the drag link. Might want to disconnect everything while the gear box is bolted solid to the frame - then remove the three mounting bolts - be careful, it's real heavy, might want an extra set of hands...
thanks everyone. got it out and just waiting for the steering coupler to come in. Couldn't find a fork big enough so I used a pitman puller. Hopefully I'll have PS by Tuesday night. Thanks again.
Going through the trauma of power steering on my 1977 F-150 Custom 4WD. Input shaft seal (just below the rag joint) burps fluid every time I add any. Got the splined rag joint off, snap ring out, and removed old seal. Found a replacement (I think) number for this seal. Comes in a kit, Ford part #C7TZ-3E502-A1A. Going to try the local Ford dealer on Tues.....Also found a thread where a guy in Canada got all the seals in the box at Advance Auto for about $40.00. Anybody know if the Ford part # is correct, or any other suggestions? Thanks.......Homer Lee
