I just bought a 1990 7.3 idi with 439,000 miles on it. Everything is original. Just recently lost reverse. All other gears work fine. Clutch is still very strong. Where do I start?
The ZF5 does indeed have reverse syncro's and they are a weak point of the transmission. Time for a rebuild.
indeed they do have syncros, but if you come to a complete stop and put it in a gear to stop the tranny and then try reverse it will tell you weather it's the syncro.
normally on a zf5 a bad reverse slider and or gear causes the issue mentioned above. If it's the gear they're quite pricey. It's the same gear as 5th so if you can find a scrap 2wd tranny or even 4wd you can normally salvage what you need.
one guy even swapped 5th and reverse because it was a farm truck and never saw a day out of 4th
Does it grind going into reverse? Like, put it in gear, let the clutch out and you get a grinding/whining noise?
If so, try playing with it first. All of my (worn out) ZF5s have been tricky to get into reverse - I've often had to let the clutch out, put it in again, and then quickly put it into gear. Often it works. The more worn the transmission, the more of a trick it takes.
It's a 4x4. And, there is no grinding or whining noise. It is almost as if reverse doesn't exist, anymore. I can get another transmission out of a buddies truck. But, I was hoping....... Like I said, I am new to the world of diesel and I thought that I would start on old idi, high miles, and just learn a lot as I went. Didn't expect the very first problem to be transmission.
Try it in 4HI and 4LO. This MIGHT be a transfer case issue. Even if reverse doesn't work in 4HI or 4LO, I wouldn't condemn the tranny just yet. I would first disconnect the t-case from the tranny and see if the tranny output turns while in reverse.

Interesting, learned something new. Every gear box I have driven there was no synchro for reverse.
And I have shifted a lot of different boxes.
A ZF5 is just not one of them.
OP has 439K on his box, must be on the ragged edge.
