I bought the truck new and now with 210,000 the top tank on the radiator has a crack in it .
For those that have replaced theirs what's a good replacement ? So far the truck has only ever had motorcraft parts , besides the ARP studs . I've seen a aluminum one from mishi moto , anyone tried it ?
So what's everyone's thoughts .
Mishimoto had some issues with their radiator (insufficient cooling). They have since redesigned it to resolve the issues, but not sure if they are selling the new design yet.
I bought one from BulletProofDiesel and am happy with it.
I lost the original at about 190 k the bottom tank developed a prety good leak. Naturaly, it happened while pulling the 5th wheel south of Houston on the way to McAllen, about 250 miles. The good news is the cooling system got a great flush since I filled and lost about 30 gallons of water until I got to my destination.
The shop in McAllen installed an Advanced Auto Parts unit and it did fine until the engine was replaced and that shop damaged it lowering the cab. So now I'm back to a Ford unit in it.
I think the after market all aluminum units are nice they look great but that doesn't mean they won't spring a leak after 200k miles, and they are very expensive. The AAP unit cost less than $180 and came with a lifetime waranty.
Fact is the stock unit is not deficient in cooling capasity and it apears that the plastic tanks are good for about 200k miles.
Last year, the radiator on my late build 2004 started leaking around the top plastic tank. I ordered one off internet which they said was a Mishimoto. When it came in, it was a good looking radiator but the the transmission cooler was reduced down to 5/16 down from 7/16 on transmission lines. No where on the radiator was the name Mishimoto. My transmission temps run around 175 degrees. Hindsight I would go with Oem since my radiator failed at 308,00 miles
Mine started leaking around the top after two oil cooler changes. I guess the big boy put too much pressure on it when laying on top of it all those hours. It had 218k miles on it when it bit the dust.
I bought a stock size from Sunbelt radiators through Amazon for $104, but when I installed it, coolant came pouring out of the plastic around the petcock, shipping damage. Price is right, they just don't package them good enough. They returned my money no problem, but I still had to go in and do it again, a real pita.
Next one I got was $250 from Advance since I didn't want to wait another week. It's a stock, seems to work fine, but at over twice the price.
Just want to follow up I looked all over for really thought about the aluminum ones but decided to go with the motorcraft one from the dealer . I got it for 280 plus tax . Most everybody else want that or more for the off brands . I figure I got 14 years out of the first one so hopefully all will be good .
Headed back to beach mountain today so we will see how it works .
Thanks all for the suggestions .
Mine lasted 9 years. Actually it still worked fine when I replaced it. I was just sick of looking at the crusty buildup around the plastic tank.
For about $50 more than the stock, I decided the Bulletproof Diesel all aluminum radiator was for me.
I bought the Orielys radiator. It looked exactly like the factory one with the plastic tanks..but it has a life time warranty...for way way cheaper than Mishimoto or Factory..Or BPD... And it is super easy to replace...so I can justify the extra money...
I had my radiator go at ~126k I was able to find a mishimoto rad for about $500 on ebay. only $100 more than the dealer wanted for a stock one. That being said be very thorough in your flush and be sure to get rid of the ford gold crap.
I got a Mishimoto radiator for 380 off amazon. It has been working great. If you work on the truck hot and are used to grabbing the top of the radiator to hoist yourself up there, prepare to get your hands burned. Everything seems to be working fine. I replaced mine when I did the water pump since there were some small leaks around the plastic to metal junctions - around 87K mi.
