I have a 1989 F150 4.9l Inline 6. My starter motor does not have the solenoid attached to it. Instead (i believe), it connects through a relay thats mounted on the side fender.
How should the wires connect (to/where) from the starter?
One cable runs from the relay mounted on the fender to the connection on the starter. That cable running down to the starter, should be the only cable on that side of the relay. This should be a battery cable sized cable, 4 gauge minimum.
I called the solenoid on the fender a relay because you did so we would be on the same page. I'm not sure of the actual proper name.
It's a solenoid in this setup. The very same part was used with the later gear-reduction starters (the one with the solenoid on top) and it was then called a relay.
No you should not have a solenoid on top of your starter.
You should only have one cable that hooks onto your starter. On your picture under #4 that cable would go on the bolt between the two white round plastic pieces. Your actual starter may be slightly different. It should be fairly obvious where the cable hooks to.
The cable that hooks there is the one coming off the relay as per #2 above.
