Are you reffering to the starter solenoid mounted on the fender, near the battery?
If so, the positive cable from the battery goes on the large post that faces forward, as well as 1-4 smaller wires with large ring terminals. The cable that runs to the starter goes on the large post facing the rear. There should be 1 more wire with a 90* boot connector, it goes on the small terminal closer to the front of the truck, should be marked with an "S" on the solenoid.

The bolt broke off? If that's it, take the starter back off and get the broken piece out.

To avoid damage to the ring gear it is best to either replace the starter or the nose piece.
If you're talking about what the bolt threads into, that's the transmission if a C-6.
