timming chain problems

I have a 351m-400 and I bought a summit racing double roller timming chain and gears. My question is on the cam plate that secures the cam. Does the cam timming gear have to set inside the cam plate? If it does that whats my problem? Wrong gear?,wrong cam?,or would I have to get a special plate?

Thanks for your time.

Are you talking about the cam thrust plate attached to the front of the block with 2 bolts?

The timing gear goes in front of the thrust plate.
