I am looking for the top part of the steering column for my 1978 F250 custom. Right now it has a tilt wheel which doesn't work & I haven't been able to find the plastic parts to make it work plus the universal joint at the top of the column is worn out.
Are there parts available where I can pull just the top part of the column where is separates just inside the engine compartment. I would like to do away with the tilt option. I don't want to go through this problem again.
I am hoping to take the wheel & automatic shift handle & collar un-bolt the top half of the column & unplug the electrical & R&R the top part of the steering column.
sorry 78, the column and parts are completely different than non tilt. a straight column should be easier to find. a lot of the tilt parts in the later columns are the same as g. m. and dodge. yours may be the same also.
Wouldn't it be easier to find a straight column out of a junkyard? My 89 F150 had the same problem and I relpaced it with a straight from a junkyard and its perfect. Only cost me $25 bucks for the column and $75 for the guy to put it in my truck.
You can get an entire column on ebay for these trucks just about any day of the week. Standard columns rarely cost over $50 and usually run around $25, tilt columns are generally $75-$125.
