I had found a truck with a tilt column and the price is certainly right. But, it won't be any good to if it can't be fixed, right?
If the wheel is pulled even with the slightest amount of pressure towards the driver, it will "unlock" the column and the wheel will tilt to whichever direction it's being pulled to. Is this an easy fix? If so what would need to be replaced, tightened...etc? Or, would I simply be better off moving on to another donor?
People have a bad habit of pulling themselves up in the cab, especially on 4x4 trucks, and a lift or big tires makes it worse. The column has a big pot metal piece that holds it together, and that is famous for cracking when it's abused like that. I have never replaced it before, but a guy I work with had that problem and he got a Ford mechanic to do it for him on the side.
Anything to do with the steering column is a pain. I have worked on several, and it's always an aggravation. There is another pot metal piece that breaks all the time that goes to the ignition switch on the tilt columns(we just had a thread about that), so while you are in there, you could check that piece too. I had to go to the dealer and ask them how to get that piece back in place(it comes out easily when it's broken in 2 pieces) and they directed me to one of the shop guys and said "he is our steering column guy". What does that tell you?
