Engine Swap

I have a 1999 F350 with a 5.4 and 5 speed manual. The engine has over 200,000 miles and I am thinking about replacement. Could a carbureted 302 or a 351 Windsor be used. I am fed up with the computer controlled systems. Thanks.

You can pretty much do whatever you want but I lik so many other's will ask "Why???" Just like I ask my customers in the power industry, How much money and how much time do you have. You'll decrease available horsepower and/or mileage for the equivalent horsepower.

Concerns will be and many people say it that emissions doesn' effect them, but you go backwards to a carb you'll have issues with that. I've seen it get more and more stringent and it'll only get worse.

Yup. As much as they can be a PIA, better to learn what there is to love about the computer controlled engines and focus on that. They actually are pretty reliable (although yes, you can be SOL when they fail if you don’t have the right tools) and the advances in emissions, HP and economy they have introduced are pretty amazing. I drive my wife’s EcoBoost Explorer and have to shake my head - if 40 years ago you had told me that I’d have a good sized vehicle with a 215 ci engine that was pretty much a rocket and got 20 mph, I’d say you were nuts. But here we are.

Why stop there? Those pesky overhead valves should be eliminated also.

The engine has to come out of a same year or newer vehicle..to be legal epa crap..
especially if you have emissions inspections in your state.

Thank you for the responses. I only use it around the farm and to pick up materials in town. Fuel mileage, power and epa are not concerns. Just need less complicated maintenance on this vehicle.
I agree that the computer controlled/aassisted engines are here to stay. Even tractors are now computerized.

If it's what you really want then go for it. Simple wire from the on position to a resistor then to the coil on a breaker point system and you got spark. You'll need a low pressure fuel pump to supply the carb. To use the already installed you'll need a pressure regulator.
