engine swap

I have a 93 F-150 Flareside with the I-6 300cc and a 5-speed trans XL 2wd stock truck. I bought this truck new and now find myself using it more on the work side than recreation. I was able to accquire a 87 F-250 4wd with a 351w in it, the engine only has 82k on it the trans is blown. Both vechicles are fuel injected can an engine swap be made using my 5-speed and what electronics/harnesses will I need to keep from my donor truck? Thanks for your time Todd.

I would advise against this swap.

One, the 351 puts out a bit more torque, which will be tough on the Mazda 5 speed you have. Don't expect the tranny to last too long.

Two, the 351 puts out more torque, but at a higher RPM than the six. The 351 will only pull a little better than the 300, and last at least twice as long and get better gas mileage doing it.

You should be OK with computer issues if you do the swap. I don't think computer controlled trannies were on the scene in 87.

I thought 351W's didn't get FI until 88? Are you sure it's an 87?

According to your profile, you live in Massachusetts.

Massachusetts appears to have an emissions inspection program. Usually "older engine in newer vehicle" is considered an automatic fail of the visual part of such inspections. The V8 would not match the I6 that goes with the VIN number, the stickers under the hood wouldn't match, etc.

Maybe a lazy inspector would stick a sniffer on the tailpipe and never pop the hood. And maybe you would do a good enough job on the install that the 1987 351W would meet the numerical emission standards for a 1993 300 Six. But I personally wouldn't want to run this particular gauntlet every single year.

I don't know how it is in massachusetts, but here in NC, it's the vehicle that determines the emissions standards, not the engine. So the F150 with all three engines has the same emissions standard to comply to. The older engine is a problem, but since basically the same EFI system was used from '88 to '95, I don't think that would present too big of a problem, although I could be wrong.
