my old truck is still running, running pretty good actually. it has a "tick" though. it is only present at low rpm while driving. it reminds me of an exhaust leak or a lifter on a gas car. I looked under the truck where the exhaust stuff hooks up and didn't notice any soot evidence. it doesn't make the sound in neutral as bad.
I did the buzz test with forscan and they all passed none sounded weak. I did the CCT test and 3,8, and 5 failed. I am running the grey CPS and have read it can contribute to a fail on 3 and 8, don't know about 5. If it were a rod knocking, I am sure I could tell, that's a fairly distinct sound. im wondering if the bearing on number 5 rod is getting bad? truck doesn't burn oil, only a dab of black smoke when I really spool. it will make the sound also on deceleration.
ideas?
I plan on replacing the engine soon, but want to salvage the core so I can tear it apart and learn maybe build a go getter.
it does respond to throttle David. it is most prevalent at right around 1000-1200 rpm. it does it upon deceleration also.
It is an early 1999 with build date of 11/98. it is a two wheel drive manual 6 speed. I need to replace the carrier bearing soon, but Im not feeling any vibration yet, and I don't think it is that type of noise.
I just changed the oil yesterday with rotella 15w-40 and added a can of risoline to try to quiet the sound if it was a clacky lifter, but no dice. Oil is at operating range top area of operating range.
I am just really trying to eliminate the fear that there is something wrong on the bottom end.
I had a slight tick. Torquing the injectors helped a lot. How much would the Hutch mod help? I haven't done the Hutch yet, but eliminating the air makes the injectors quieter too, right?
5 is not a normal CCT fail... that needs to be looked into (UVCH link in my signature)
Re-torquing has helped a lot of people with noises under the VCs, so has the Hutch mod. I have also experienced and witnessed a lot of Hutch mod fails, so make sure you don't have air in fuel.
I had just replaced the flywheel with a new one when I did the throw out bearing.
I went and got another valve cover gasket and put it on, and same thing fail on cylinders 3 8 and 5.
The tick is still present. passed buzz test on all 8 injectors.
knowing my luck, the bearing is probably bad on that one, and it wont be long until it locks up. I guess I will start hunting another engine to put in the thing.
what is a fair price for a good 7.3 with around 80k miles on it?
Before you starting sourcing a new engine you need to rule out a bad injector. Just because it passed a buzz test doesn't mean the injector is good. I would swap holes with another one and see if the contribution fail follows that injector.
There are several things which could be making the tick that would not mean engine replacement
