Rough idle until it warms up

My 2002 F350... plugged in or not.. runs rough at idle if I try to leave before it is completely warm... including transmission... it won't go... examples... 1/2 warm... revs up... put it into gear... acts like limp mode... keep mashing the GO pedal.... engine light comes on... and it will take off... (like it is bypassing something)... no code... leave almost warmed up or just running temperature and it will surge as if it is not getting enough fuel... engine light comes on and it takes off.. no code... engine light goes out... still runs well... can't get it home or to a shop fast enough to check it before the light goes out.... but let it warm up for a 1/2 hour no problems ... but that kills the fuel mileage... any thoughts?

You don't need a CEL to be on to pull codes. The CEL only lights up when a code is thrown. After that, even if the light goes out, the code is "stored" and can still be read.

Make sure your mechanic has a good scanner, as generic OBDII scanners won't work. I learned that the hard way.

Snap on scanner at the house... about 5 years old... auto parts stores are no good... and the shop my work uses can't get any readings either.... try to get a reading when the lite is on... was the suggestion

That will show an active code, but a good scanner will still be able to pull stored codes with no light on.
