Could someone please explain to me the 30 min. run time as it effects "putting the truck in park and leaving it run while you're out of truck" ? taking delivery of a 2017 F-350 6.7, cc, lb 4x4 with the lariat ultimate package next week.
If you leave it running, get out and lock it, it honks at you that you left it running. While you go into the hardware store, it will keep running. But for the sake of fuel consumption, it will shut off in thirty minutes. Same with remote start, it shuts off in a certain amount of time. It hasn't shut off on me yet, and it's been -25 C here. I don't think it's a big issue. The other thing you can do if you don't want the noise/honk, is shut it off lock it, and remote start it.
I believe you can shut it off from the menu on the dash. I was looking through mine the other day after it went to shut off. It was under advanced settings I believe.
Do some research before you change it. The 30 min max might also be for low oil pressure at idle. Diesels used to have low oil pressure at idle, so you would have to bump up the idle for any prolonged idle time. You have to know that the there is a high pressure oil pump that runs the fuel injectors, and that pump is supplied by the low pressure oil pump. My 7.3 converted ambulance to service truck goes into higher idle if it is running in park for over 10 min. IIRC.

never heard that about the oil pressure. I know high idle especially on the older trucks was to increase th alternators output to overcome the additional electrical load from lights, a/c, radios and the many other needs of an ambulance. High idle also increase cylinder temp to help reduce washing the cylinder
Is there a high idle you can switch on the new ones? Mine will high idle at start up when cold but idles normal after it's warm. I know it's not good for them to sit idle. Our new rescue squads at work we can set the cruise and idle them up but I don't think it works on the trucks.
2017 doesn't have a high pressure and low pressure oil pump. It uses high pressure fuel pump instead. Long periods of idling can still cause cylinder wash especially when colder temps. High idle does counter act that by increasing idle at colder engine temps. Manual high idle is possible with upfitter switches and the right wire. I have not messed with mine yet, waiting to see how it behaves. I think the other issue with long periods of idling is what it will do to emissions equipment, and the DPF. This may also cause more DOF regeneration and the corresponding increase in fuel consumption. Versus driving, pulling working, which generates the heat to use the urea. We are going to need to set up a tech folder for stuff like high idle.
i read about a few cases where Ford counts your idle hours against the milage of the truck and can actually shorten your warranty. I would recommend you manage your idle hours to a minimal and only use them when necessary.
I idle my truck daily for about 10 hours a day, 5 days a week. It is my office. It runs my wifi, computer, printer, heater / a/c and my windows need to go up and down all day talking to construction workers. The truck will automatically go into high idle on its own for a bout 15 minutes twice a day to burn everything off. I have 10,000 on it now and so far no issues what-so-ever.
