Hey everyone making my first post about my 83 f-250 supercab 6.9 idi. Im having a few issues aswell as some questions about parts and what not. First off the starter is toast and was looking around and cant find a gear reduction starter with a 10 tooth bendix gear. Second thing is when I turn the heater on I can smell coolant so Im thinking a bad heater core? Coolant does drip on the ground but nothing on the fire wall. I also have an oil leak but cant find where it is coming from, so what (if any) spots are common to leak? Thanks for any help
Welcome to FTE. Start with the "read first" section and you might find some answers. I remember seeing a post about common oil leaks in there somewhere.
welcome to FTE.
heater core is a 25 minute job. remove lines from core nipples under hood and stich the lines in the hood hinge to keep them higher than the radiator.
open passenger side door, open glove box.remove glove box, and look in toward the firewall, there is 6 (i think) bolts holding the heater core cover on. remove the bolts and heater core cover. reach in and remove the leaking core.

So, did some research. Early (83-84) IDIs used 10-tooth direct-drive starters. Later models(6.9,7.3) used gear-reduction 13-tooth starers.
What I would do at this point is get a standard IDI 13-tooth gear reduction starter. DB Electrical and Powermaster are two names that people here like.
If you can't get it to fit, buy a later-model flywheel and use that.
or got to a local starter /alternator rebuild shop and ask them to make you a gear reduction starter with the 10 tooth drive on it.
update: i found a gear reduction 10 tooth starter and i will be ordering it soon. I did find out however that my glowplugs have never been working. The relay makes the click noise when i push the manual glow plug button but I used a test light and the plugs werent getting power or getting hot. So some wires or something isnt attached to the glow plug relay for the plugs. Any suggestions of what i should look for or where to start?
12 volts on one of the large terminals. 12 volts to one of the small terminals. ground wire from other small terminal to the push button. this will give you 12 volts on the last large terminal when button is pushed. if no power out of the relay, the contact plates in the relay are burned and the relay needs to be replaced.
